Astym® treatment is a therapy that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminates or reduces unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions and is designed to restore soft tissues at a cellular level.  Astym is not an acronym.  Astym describes the mechanism by which the treatment works A-stimulation of the body’s natural healing response.

Astym®treatment is highly effective and even works when other approaches fail. One of the main reasons Astym® treatment is so much more effective than other treatments is that it was scientifically developed to resolve the underlying cause of soft tissue problems, rather than just trying to temporarily relieve symptoms.  Astym®treatment is unmatched in its ability to resolve tendinopathies, scar tissue problems, and other soft tissue dysfunctions.  It regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and removes unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.

Astym therapy has helped countless people by restoring their movement, getting rid of their pain, and giving them back their lives.  A few examples of the conditions that have been treated effectively are planter fasciitis, Achilles tendinosis, IT band syndrome, hamstring strain, shin splints, knee pain, and hip pain.

Astym therapy is so effective because it was scientifically developed to target the actual cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms. Years of scientific and clinical research conducted at leading universities and hospital systems resulted in Astym treatment, which now routinely resolves injuries that were previously thought to be permanent.  Astym treatment is unmatched in its ability to resolve tendinopathies, scar tissue problems, and other soft tissue dysfunctions.

What to Expect

At your first Asytm treatment session, an Astym-certified Fischer Institute physical therapists will conduct a thorough evaluation, and then follow specific treatment parameters to initiate a regenerative process that encourages the resorption of scar tissue and the regeneration of damaged soft tissues. Instruments are run firmly along your skin, following the direction of the muscle, tendon or ligament. You will feel bumps as the instrument moves along your skin. These bumps indicate defective or damaged soft tissue. The first couple of treatments may range from being only slightly noticeable to mildly uncomfortable.

As your body heals, those bumps will decrease and the area around your injury will smooth out nicely, indicating healing. There also may be some mild bruising and soreness in the area being treated. That is one indication that the body is hard at work, absorbing the old dysfunctional tissue and laying down healthy new tissue. Most patients typically experience a decrease in pain with an increase in movement within the first 3-4 treatment sessions.

Immediately after the Astym treatment, your therapist will give you a customized exercise program designed to help the new fibers line up properly and to improve the muscular strength and the movement pattern of your body.  The combination of the Astym treatment and the proper exercise program would create the great healing environment for your body to recover most effectively and efficiently so that you will be able to return to your previous level of activities in a shorter amount of time.
